Trends for 2023

With 2023 well under way, I’m so excited about the year ahead. Within the field of interior design, many trends tend to come and go. When it comes to your wardrobe, it may be possible to keep up with the latest fashions, but who can afford to keep redecorating and redesigning their entire homes every year. For this reason, it’s vital that you stay true to yourself and don’t get carried away with trends just for the sake of it. Your home has to stand the test of time – at least a few years before you’re ready for another makeover.

In 2023 we’re seeing some great trends that I’m loving – and, importantly, have longevity.

Here are a few of my notable favourites, many of which I’ll expand upon in standalone blogs in the coming months:

1/ Embracing nature

We’re all aware of how living in nature is good for us. Using natural materials such as bamboo, sisal and hessian is all the rage right now. Bare wood is back too – rather than painting it, we’re embracing it and enjoying all its knots and beautiful imperfections. And, of course, using plants truly brings the outside in.

2/ Heavy marble

Again, this one is all about embracing nature. I’m loving the return of natural stones and particularly marble. The natural veins that run and collide through the marble mean that no two pieces are ever the same. While we’re used to seeing it used as a kitchen countertop, we’re now increasingly seeing it being used to seamlessly run across floors all the way up walls. Alternatively, incorporate it into a piece of furniture to make your piece truly bespoke. I absolutely fell in love with the Italian heavy veined tile that I used on this bathroom vanity unit.

3/ Space age

Space is having to work harder than it’s ever done before. For many of us, our homes are also our offices, our workshops, our gyms… Rooms are having to double up and become multi functional spaces. Clever storage is key, as well as creating segregated areas in rooms that, while each has a defined purpose, also are designed to ensure the entire room fits together as a whole and flows.

4/ Statement lamps

Lighting always has to be major consideration in every room design. Light fittings are not just a finishing touch, they literally set the scene. In 2023 we’re going big and bold and letting our lamps do the talking.

I’m loving this Raphael table lamp from Soho Home

5/ Stripes are in

If you’re going to embrace stripes then go for it. Stripes can make a fantastic stand-out statement and need to be bold and beautiful. But you need to be brave. Look how the clever use of this stripe painted across the ceiling, walls and floor gives the wow factor.
